"Innovation for Welfare"
My main motivation to enroll me in Social Innovation Incubator Class is because I think, people can work for the welfare of others and not just for their own; try to be a more inclusive society. We can change our way of thinking and looking for how to improve processes, products and services to enhance our way of living. A fundamental of innovation is also, engage people to direct them towards an innovative way of think and work.
When people listen the word "Innovation", commonly, they relate it with a technological change, where high-tech devices are involved. But, it is no necessary to be in that way. Innovation is more related to open-minds and hope to look make possible the unthinkable. Expect to find a treasure where is garbage. A beautiful example is the social project "Sonidos de la Tierra" (Sounds from the Earth). A music professor in Paraguay find how to give hope and self-esteem to children and young in low income communities through produce their own musical instruments, organize and play in local orchestras.
Mike Hahn in his blog "Innovation in other parts of the world" talked also about this amazing innovation; using garbage as raw material to build musical instruments. I heard about "Sonidos de la Tierra" projects some months ago in the news in Mexico. I was wondered how people, in the most extreme conditions, can find a innovative processes, with the goal to look for a better way to life. The phrase struck me the most from the project staff was: "We are not looking for good musicians, but better citizens." This is a reflexion, that becoming a better persons, will have a positive impact in the society and it should be a goal that all of us should pursue.
Innovation also is how to influence people and guide them through the process to generate ideas, take them to concrete actions and achieve feasible results. Living in extreme conditions, force people to be more creative to get their essential needs. But, "Sonidos de la Tierra" project shows us that music is human expression and also a need. Music is not only about generation of harmonic and rhythmic sounds, but it is a way to help people to express themselves, personally and socially.
This is a lesson about the essentials of the innovation. High-tech is not required or complicated systems to improve people's life. It is about how to guide minds and take them toward a extreme, even absurd idea, to make life's improvement. Who can think create music from garbage?
