When reading this article, the first example that came to my mind was the popular Keitai novels in Japan. This was a very popular trend in japan a couple of years ago. These Keitai novels are mobile phone novels novels that were written by mainly Japanese teenagers and published on websites on their phones. These Keitai novels were usually the same length as text messages. As I am sure you all know, every teenager in Japan has a mobile phone. The novels were usually romantic novels about the life's of these teenagers. The value they provided was on the go, convenient entertainment. Anyone who has been to japan or knows about Japan knows that many people commute to work via train, so the time people spend on the train was when they used to read these keitai stories. These stories became very popular in japan and most of them were free to access, but the writers made money from advertising fees. Not many people would be willing to pay to read the story of a normal young girl so that is why the reason to make many of these keitai novel free makes sense. Keitai novels however became so popular that they were turned into movies and they even beat out Sony movies in the box office.
