Social Impact Assessment

Here is very useful information on social impact assessment by RED OCHRE (2011), a non-profit organization that provides technology, marketing, financial, and commercial solutions to social entrepreneurial sectors in UK.

Social impact is the positive change that our social enterprise wants to make over time. It is important to measure the social impacts, because, when we successfully do that, it will help us to: do better marketing; win funding and secure contracts for our venture; focus on our core values and strategies; allow employees internally motivated for their work.

Then, what will be some helpful questions to ask before assessing social impact?
1. What are the longer term changes for people, the environment or the economy that the social enterprise creates or contributes to?
2. What impacts, if we were not achieving them, would stop us from meeting our mission?
3. Are there any other things we need to know about – such as unexpected impacts of our activities (either positive or negative)?

Alright, now, let's think about three practical ways to measure social impacts:

In order to analyze our impact, we can use: interviews; feedback forms; third party evaluation; online polls. If you are interested in, you can find more data collection methods below:

Here are more tools and approaches that you may want to consider:
- new philanthropy capital wellbeing questionnaire: www.philanthropycapital.org
- social accounting and audit: www.socialauditnetwork.org.uk
- local multiplier 3: www.lm3online.org
- social return on investment (SROI): www.thesroinetwork.org
- United Nations human development index: http://hdr.undp.org/en/content/human-development-index-hdi

What is your idea for assessing social impact? Pet health index? Life quality index? Change in the awareness of ethnic differences before and after the class? Environmental improvement? Feel free to think about it, using these provided resources. All the best wishes for your venture!
