Ideation and Brainstorming (Week 4 post)

During our trip to the CREATE lab, many people asked about how to generate ideas and about failure. The ideation phase of product development is the perfect time to brainstorm a lot of ideas, and try some and fail, and then try again.
This article about a University of Pennsylvania product design project working with Ghana describes their ideation process and how ideas are generated: http://accelerator.bresslergroup.com/2013/11/structured-ideation-and-brainstorming/

The author suggests that a full day of brainstorming together doesn't work well for that group. Instead, the group would meet for smaller sessions and also brainstorm on their own, and then bring ideas together at a later time. The book "Quiet, the Power of Introverts" by Susan Cain recommends that group brainstorming not occur, because people collectively generate more ideas on their own than they do together as a group. Do you think this is really true? Have you experienced brainstorming sessions that didn't go very well, but instead might have been better if the group individually thought of ideas and then came together to collaborate?
