Often times we tend to make things a lot harder than they should be. We take something and some how make it into mission impossible. I've been in conversation with close friends and family about this very topic. Wether it be in school or work, people sometimes over think things.
Yes, a start-up is by no means an easy feat. It is defiantly a complicated endeavor that takes talent, timing, and often patients to succeed. Yet when hearing successful entrepreneurs about their own experience they often speak of failure that would eventually hone the company into a success, but they have also talk about keeping it simple.
This past weekend I came across an articled titled "The #1 Mistake Entrepreneurs Make". The article is written by Michael Lazerow who is currently part of the Salesforce.com and has started as well as invested in a number of companies. Of course, this our his own opinions based on his own personal experiences but he has been able to start four different companies and invest in more than 25 start-ups.
He states there are an array of mistakes that often times entrepreneurs make but they one fatal mistake that can cause a company to go down is that of focusing on the wrong thing. Lazerow states that "success focus exclusively on efforts that matter and are able to tune out the rest. People who focus succeed."
Mr Laserow goes on to detail his frame of thinking that allows him to focus on the vital components of a company:
Asking oneself simple questions: What are the top 3 things you need to accomplish in the next 6-12 months to give the company the best chance of long-term success?
From there he ranks responses in order of importance.
For many of us it is often times difficult to thing this way because we have a million things on our mind. But I felt this been a good read for the class who ever might be interested.
